These beautifully constructed black houses are replicas of the houses the people of Lewis and Harris lived in. The standard house is approximately 20" X 12" (510mm x 310mm). Each stone is selected and then cemented into place. The roof is then constructed and the thatch is held down with net and stones.

Ballachuilish Slate quarried on the west coast of Scotland has been used as roofing material in North West Scotland for centuries. The slate used by our artist Elaine has been weathered for many decades before being recovered for use in this unique artform.
